God loves all the dead Africans
CBC News Sunday is having a special report today about the grandmothers from Canada and Africa gathering at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto. Alicia Keys was featured, speaking about her visit to Africa and her support for the cause. I'm all for Celebrities using their fame for social and environmental good. More power to them if they can tweak the fame machine to bring more sheep on side for the good of the planet. What troubles me is when she speaks about god and the miracles these grandmothers do bringing up their orphaned grandkids.
I heard a few religious references in the program. I doubt you'll hear much about what christian groups and the catholic church are doing to thwart the efforts of NGOs to stop the epidemic. A little education and some condoms could do wonders, but the church won't have any of it. Instead, they preach abstinence, and scourge continues, robbing children of their parents and their future. To promote condoms is to endorse promiscuity, or so it seems, even though humans will continue to fuck each others' brains out regardless of whatever superstition we cram down our throats, because it's what we're hardwired to do. You can't tell DNA a goddamned thing. It wants to recombine, and your god can't stop it. And so we fuck and reinfect and pray and mourn. God loves poverty, pestilence, plague and ignorance. What a wonderful dude. Makes me want to sing.

I have to wonder if we will someday look back on this in the same way we now look back on slavery - a horrible mistake and source of incredible guilt. It seems that people would rather cling to their absurd religious delusions than face the reality of human suffering.
vjack: 2000 years of this crap. We supposedly live in the "Information Age", bristling with technology, fattening the pipes and jacking into the matrix, and yet, church rolls are growing. What will it take to push the masses off of the easy path of conformity? The future you suggest seems incredibly optimistic. If we are able to look back at this past in shame, we will have achieved a future of immeasurable beauty, and survived as a species to witness it.
